Sacramento – Last week, the Assembly Utilities & Energy Committee passed AB 2092 (Mathis – 2024), which would authorize the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to conduct a feasibility study on the advantages of permitting & constructing Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).

Assemblyman Mathis expressed his satisfaction, saying, "The Utilities & Energy Committee unanimously approved my bill that orders the PUC to study the benefits of SMRs." He highlighted the importance of this study in the context of California's energy goals, emphasizing the need for a smooth transition without energy price increases or shortages.

In his statement, Mathis urged for a shift in perception, stating, "It’s time for politicians & the public to stop comparing advanced nuclear energy to that of the Chernobyl disaster." He emphasized the necessity of advanced nuclear energy in achieving California's State-mandated goal of 100% zero-carbon electrical generation by 2045.

Mathis further outlined the benefits of Small Modular Reactors, pointing out their smaller physical footprint, greater flexibility, improved scalability, reduced capital investment requirements, and enhanced safety designs. He stressed that advanced nuclear energy, specifically SMRs, is crucial for California to meet its ambitious carbon-neutrality goals while ensuring affordability for working families.

Looking ahead, Assemblyman Mathis expressed optimism for the future of AB 2092, stating, "I look forward to AB 2092 passing the Legislature, being signed by the Governor, and helping us address our growing energy needs while meeting our ambitious carbon-neutrality goals."
