Following the release of Governor Gavin Newsom's $322.3 billion budget proposal, Assemblywoman Alexandra Macedo from Tulare expressed her disapproval in a public statement. She criticized the governor for what she perceives as a lack of consideration for Californians.
Macedo stated, "I am appalled at the lack of consideration Gavin Newsom continues to have for the people he serves. Only in California can the Governor raid $7.1 billion from the state’s savings account and declare a revenue surplus of $363 million." She urged Newsom to prioritize services that affect daily life in California and suggested his policies have failed.
The assemblywoman also addressed recent fires in Southern California, expressing sympathy for those affected: "Countless Californians have heartbreakingly lost their homes, businesses, and jobs in the Southern California fires. My deepest sympathies and prayers are with these communities."
Macedo criticized Newsom's approach to fire prevention and resource management, saying, "My sadness shifts to anger since Governor Newsom has still not prioritized fire prevention and resource management." She argued that proper funding could have mitigated or avoided such crises.
She highlighted the economic impact of these disasters: "It is shocking to see homes obliterated, entire communities vanish and the devastation to our great state... there is an estimated total economic cost of $50 billion."
Macedo questioned the governor's plans regarding rebuilding efforts: "The Governor does not appear to have a plan to address the insolvency of the state’s FAIR plan to rebuild the homes, businesses and jobs lost."
Additionally, she noted concerns about other emergencies like Bird Flu: "The state of California is currently in a state of emergency in regard to Bird Flu and the fires... Nothing in the budget brings more water infrastructure."
Macedo concluded by criticizing budget allocations while Southern California faces challenges: "Yet, he found money for lawsuits to ‘Trump proof’ California while Southern California is burning."
