Sacramento – California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed Assembly Bill 2567, introduced by Assemblyman Devon Mathis in 2024. The bill mandates that higher education institutions in California include data on housing for veteran students in their reports published online and submitted to the legislature.

Assemblyman Mathis expressed his satisfaction with the bill's signing, stating, "Today, the Governor’s signature has shown Veterans that the State will not leave them behind when it comes to ensuring that they have a fair chance at gaining a higher education." He highlighted the unique challenges veterans face when transitioning from military service to civilian life and pursuing higher education. Mathis noted that housing insecurity should not be an additional burden for those who have served.

He added, "AB 2567 will ensure that our Veterans are not disproportionately harmed by the housing crisis that affects the students of our State." As a veteran himself who pursued higher education after his service, Mathis emphasized his pride in addressing this issue during his final year in the Legislature. He believes that the data generated by this measure will benefit veterans for years to come.
