Sacramento – 5 of Assemblyman Mathis’ bills unanimously passed their respective Committees today, addressing key issues impacting the state. AB 2532, one of the bills, focuses on improving Community College nursing programs by considering residence within the college district in the admissions process. Assemblyman Mathis emphasized the importance of this bill, stating, “For far too long, the State has been suffering from a nursing shortage that has disproportionately hurt the Central Valley... My bill helps combat this crisis by allowing Community College nursing programs to consider residence within the college district as a positive factor in the admissions process.”
Jonna Schengel, Dean of Nursing & Allied Health at the College of the Sequoias, expressed support for AB 2532, highlighting the significance of admitting students from the region to meet local healthcare workforce needs.
Another bill presented by Assemblyman Mathis, AB 2567, aims to provide better insights into the educational outcomes of Veteran students in higher education institutions. The Assemblyman, being a Veteran himself, stressed the importance of not leaving Veterans behind in the pursuit of higher education.
Assemblyman Mathis also introduced AB 2306, which focuses on safeguarding military installations from hostile foreign actors. He emphasized the need for policies to prevent the acquisition of sensitive lands near critical military sites.
Furthermore, Assemblyman Devon Mathis advocated for a bill offering Veterans more opportunities for free access to state parks beyond Memorial Day. He highlighted the importance of acknowledging and supporting Veterans for their service, stating, “Veterans deserve more than two opportunities for the State to say thank you for their service with free access to the beautiful parks within the state park system.”
The successful passage of these bills signifies a step towards addressing critical issues in California, from nursing shortages to supporting Veterans and protecting military installations.
