Republican lawmakers in California have called on President Trump to investigate the state’s High-Speed Rail Authority (HSRA) following a critical report from the High-Speed Rail Office of the Inspector General. The report highlighted that the HSRA has not completed a risk analysis for its Merced-to-Bakersfield segment, which is essential for determining if the plan is feasible.
The legislators’ letter expressed concern over the project’s rising costs and lack of progress. Initially estimated at $34 billion with completion expected by 2020, the project’s budget has surged to over $128 billion. Despite promises of private funding covering more than 20% of costs, taxpayers are bearing nearly all expenses.
To date, $13.7 billion has been spent, including $1.6 billion on marketing and consultants. Only 22 miles of raised dirt and 11 overpass structures have been completed, with no track laid.
The lawmakers argue that funds allocated to this project could be better used for wildfire protection and water infrastructure improvements in California.
Assemblywoman Alexandra M. Macedo, along with other Republican leaders such as James Gallagher and Brian Jones, signed the letter expressing their support for Trump’s investigation into HSRA’s management.
“By all metrics, the High-Speed Rail is a colossal failure,” they stated in their letter. They urged accountability and a reevaluation of the project’s viability to prevent further financial waste.
